(Class 12 geography, Fundamentals of Human GeographyChapter-5. Primary Activities )

Answer.

Market gardening farming is done near urban areas due to the following reasons:

Market gardening agriculture is more in demand in urban areas than in rural areas:

Market gardening mainly involves the cultivation of high-value crops such as vegetables, fruits, and flowers on a relatively small scale and these products are in great demand due to the high-income group of consumers in urban areas. Due to the low income of rural households, there is not much demand for these items in rural areas.

Urban areas have given higher prices for fresh produce of Market gardening, so producing Market gardening products near urban areas helps in such early access to urban areas.

Market gardening agricultural products perish quickly:

Market gardening products like vegetables and fruits are perishable in nature and need to be grown near market areas so that they can reach them in time to market.

The cost of marketable vegetable cultivation is high:

Market gardening is both labor and capital-intensive, requiring irrigated land, hybrid seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, greenhouses, and artificial heating. Cultivation near urban areas makes it easier to obtain inputs for cultivation and is best suited for market sale for its produce.

Market gardening is well developed in the densely populated industrial districts of northwestern Europe, the northeastern United States, and the Mediterranean region.

In areas where farmers grow only vegetables, the cultivation is known as truck farming.
