A catchment area is an area from which water flows into a major river and its tributaries. 

In terms of areas, the proportion of the catchment area of ​​river Ganga is the largest in the country. The catchment area of ​​Ganga is about 8,61,452 sq km which is about 26.30% of the total area of ​​32, 12,289 sq km of India.


However, in terms of water availability, the Brahmaputra catchment area is the largest in India. The average annual availability of water in the Ganges basin is the second largest after the Brahmaputra river basin. The average annual water availability of the Ganga basin is 525.02 cubic km per annum while the Brahmaputra and Barak river basins have about 585.60 cubic km per annum.
