Question.
Why has 82°30' E been selected as the ‘standard meridian’ of India?
(Chapter-1 India — Location, Class 11 NCERT geography "India Physical Environment")
Answer.
According to common understanding among countries of the world, the standard meridian of a country should be a multiple of 7°30' longitude (which is equal to 30 minutes). This is the reason why 82°30' East is chosen as the 'standard meridian' of India because its longitude is a multiple of 7°30' (82°30' = (7°30' )*11 ) and also It passes through almost the middle of India (near Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh).
