(Chapter-2  Structure and Physiography, Class 11 NCERT geography "India Physical Environment")

Answer.

Following is the comparative description of the islands of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal-

The group of islands in the Arabian Sea is called Lakshadweep and Minicoy while the group of islands in the Bay of Bengal is called the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The total area of Lakshadweep Islands is 32 sq km while the geographical area of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is 8,249 km. This means that the islands in the Arabian Sea are much smaller than the islands in the Bay of Bengal.

The Arabian Sea islands are located on the west coast of India while the Bay of Bengal islands is located on the eastern side of India.

The Lakshadweep Islands and Minicoy Islands are made up of coral deposits while the Andaman and Nicobar Islands consist of sea mountains, volcanic mountains (Barren Island), and coral deposits.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands receive convective rainfall and have an equatorial type of vegetation (evergreen forest) which is not so much in the Lakshadweep islands.

Saddle Peak (738 m above sea level) is the highest peak in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands located in North Andaman while the highest peak of Lakshadweep is only 15 m above sea level.
