Explain why high-tech industries in many countries are being attracted to the peripheral areas of major metropolitan centers.
(Class 12 geography, Fundamentals of Human Geography, Chapter 6. Secondary Activities )
Answer.
High-tech industries are attracted to the areas where the cost of production is low and there is easy access to the market for the sale of the final products.
High-tech industries in many countries are developing towards the peripheral areas of major metropolitan areas as the peripheral areas of metropolitan cities provide optimal conditions for high-tech industries in the following ways:
The peripheral areas of the major metropolitan center are well connected through rapid transport lines due to the proximity of the metropolitan center. By setting up industries here, the industry easily gets raw materials from rural areas as well as machinery, electricity, and other inputs from metro cities. Along with this, a large market is available for the high-income group of people living in the metropolitan center for the sale of the final products of the industry.
The land cost of the peripheral area of metro cities is low and there is enough space for setting up industries at a low cost.
Urban problems such as pollution and congestion are not as common here as in the center of metro cities.
The cheap skilled workforce is easily available in this area from rural areas which reduces the cost of the industry.
For the above reasons, the peripheral areas of metro cities provide many good conditions for industries to reduce the cost of production and increase the sales of final goods.
