 Question.

How is the latitudinal spread of India advantageous to her?

(Chapter-1 India — Location, Class 11 NCERT geography "India Physical Environment")

Answer.

As we know,

The latitudinal extent of India extends from 6°45'N (southern part of Nicobar Island in the Bay of Bengal) to 37°6'N (northern part of Ladakh).

The Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees north) passes almost through the middle of India.

India's vast latitudinal spread has the following advantages:

India's latitudinal extension is beneficial for all sectors, be it the economy, culture, or environment.

India's vast latitudinal spread is responsible for the great variation and diversity in climate, soil types, and natural vegetation[ rainforest, deciduous forest, temperate forest, thorny forest, mangrove forest, grasslands] in the country.

The southern part of the country (Peninsular India) comes under a tropical climate and the northern part of India comes under a sub-tropical zone or warm temperate zone. The diversity in climate provides a tourist attraction.

India's large latitudinal spread resulted in diversity in climatic zones as well as in soil types that support the production of a wide variety of crops.

India is rich in biodiversity at all three levels of biodiversity – genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity.

The latitudinal spread of India has brought diversity in culture, society, language, and festivals.

India is known as a subcontinent due to its latitudinal extension of India.
