Question.

What are the problems of road transport in mountainous, desert, and flood-prone regions?

(Class 12 geography, Fundamentals of Human GeographyChapter-8. Transport and Communication )

Answer.

Road transport is a type of land transport and is best suited for short-distance connectivity and door-to-door movement of goods, passengers, and services. India has the second largest road network in the world after the United States.

The road network is not uniformly accessible all over the world; It is affected by both human factors like economy and natural factors like relief, slope, desert, etc.

Following are the problems of road transport in the mountainous region:

Naturally, road transport is not the most suitable transport option in hilly areas as laying a road network on a sloping surface is a difficult task. Laying road transport in mountainous areas is also expensive and takes a lot of time.

Mountainous regions are often prone to natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and avalanches; These natural hazards often damage road networks and cut off major connectivity. Landslides and avalanches are major problems in the Himalayan region which cost both money and human loss.

Road transport in mountainous areas often causes accidents.

In the mountainous region, the most suitable transport systems are ropeways and airways.

Following are the problems of road network in desert areas:

Although desert areas are almost flat surfaces, construction and maintenance of road networks in desert areas are very expensive due to heavy dust and sand.

The accumulation of dust and sand in the road network in desert areas makes it difficult to drive a motor.

In the desert region, the day temperature is very high and the night time is very cold; Due to the high daily change of temperature, it creates cracks in the road network and reduces the overall life of the road network.

Road network in the desert area is not economically viable as desert areas have low populations and very little economic activity.

Road network problem in flood-affected areas:

The flood-prone areas are the low-lying areas of the plains. Road networks are easily submerged in flood-prone areas; Hence floods often damage the road network.

The embanked rail network is the most suitable transport in the flood-prone area.
