Why is the western coastal plain is devoid of any delta?

 Question.

Why is the western coastal plain is devoid of any delta?

(Chapter-2  Structure and Physiography, Class 11 NCERT geography "India Physical Environment")

Answer.

There is no delta on the western coastal plain because of the following reasons;

The formation of a delta by a river requires heavy sediments and siltation, but the western coastal plain and the Western Ghats do not provide enough sediment and silt to form the delta.

The west-flowing rivers originate from the Western Ghats and the distance between the Western Ghats and the coastal waters is very short and the slopes are high, so the rivers do not collect enough sediments and silt for the delta.

Like the Himalayas, sedimentary rocks are not much present in the Western Ghats and the Western Coastal Plains, the Western Ghats are composed of metamorphic and igneous rocks that are harder than sedimentary rocks; As a result, it does not provide sufficient sediments to the river like the Himalayas.

The western coastal plains are examples of subducting coastal plains and such coasts have active tides that make them unsuitable for delta formation.
