Question.

Distinguish between conventional and non-conventional sources of energy.

( Chapter - 5 Minerals and Energy Resources, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )

( Chapter - 3 Mineral and Power Resources, Cass 8 NCERT Resources and Development ( Geography) )

Answer.

Energy is essential for all activities and it is the key to development. Energy resources can be classified as conventional and non-conventional sources of energy.

Following are the differences between conventional and non-conventional sources of energy:

Examples of conventional sources of energy are firewood, dung cake, coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydroelectric power, and thermal energy while non-conventional sources of energy are solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, geothermal energy, and biogas.

Conventional sources of energy are polluting sources of energy to a large extent while non-conventional sources of energy are not much polluting.

Conventional sources of energy are exhaustible in nature while non-conventional sources are non-exhaustible in nature.

Conventional sources of energy such as coal, natural gas, and fossil fuels are non-renewable in nature while most of the non-conventional sources of energy are renewable in nature.

India does not have sufficient reserves of conventional sources of energy such as petroleum and natural gas, while India is endowed with an abundance of non-conventional sources of energy such as solar energy and wind energy.

Conventional sources of energy are not sustainable in nature so the future of energy does not lie with conventional sources while the future of energy lies with non-conventional sources as their usage is sustainable in nature.
