Locate the mines of Bauxite on the physical map of India.

Question.

Locate the mines of Bauxite on the physical map of India.

( Chapter - 5 Minerals and Energy Resources, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )

Answer.

Bauxite is the only non-ferrous metallic mineral of which India has substantial reserves. Bauxite is a residual mass of ore-bearing weathering material and is formed after the decomposition of surface rocks that are rich in aluminum silicates.

We extract aluminum from bauxite ore.

India's bauxite deposits are mainly found in the Amarkantak plateau, Maikal hills, and the plateau region of Bilaspur-Katni. Odisha is the largest bauxite-producing state in India.

Important bauxite mines are Katni (Madhya Pradesh), Amarkantak (Madhya Pradesh), Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), Maikal range (Chhattisgarh) and Koraput (Odisha).

The following map of India shows the distribution of bauxite mines.
