What are basic industries? Give an example.

Answer.
According to the main role of industrial development, industries can be divided into two types-
- basic industry or key industry
- consumer industry
Basic industries are those industries whose finished goods are used as raw materials by other industries. Some examples of basic industries are-
- iron and steel industry
- copper smelting
- aluminum smelting
- petroleum refineries
The finished product of the iron and steel industry is steel, and steel is used as a raw material by automobile industries, construction industries, and heavy machinery industries. Hence, the iron and steel industry is a basic industry.
The end product of copper smelting industries is copper and copper is used as a raw material in electrical and electronic industries, jewelry industries, and utensil industries.
The end product of aluminum industries is aluminum which is used as a raw material in electrical and electronic industries and in utensil industries.
The byproduct of the petroleum refinery industry is used as a raw material in various petrochemical industries such as the fertilizer, detergent, and pharmaceutical industries.
Hence all the above are examples of basic industries.
