What do you understand by social forestry?
(Chapter 5 Natural Vegetation, Class 11 NCERT geography "India Physical Environment")
Answer.
The term social forestry was first used in India in 1976 by the National Commission for Agriculture.
In social forestry, forests are grown to help the environment, society, economy, and rural economy with the help of communities and government. Tree plantation is also done on barren land to help in environmental, social, and rural development through social forestry.
The National Commission for Agriculture (1976) has classified social forestry into three categories-
- urban forestry
- rural forestry
- farm forestry
Urban forestry means planting and managing trees on public and privately owned land in and around the urban center. Green belts around urban centers and industries are examples of urban forestry.
Growing forests along with agriculture is an example of rural forestry. In rural forestry, we grow forests on rural community land, which benefits the community there.
Farm forestry is the process by which farmers grow trees on their farms for commercial and non-commercial purposes. Land like rams, meadows, land around houses, etc., are used for planting trees under agroforestry.
