Why are farmers committing suicides in several states of the country?

Answer.
Farmer suicides are highest in Maharashtra (Vidarbha region), Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
As per the 2019 report, the following are the statistics of farmer suicides in various states:
- Maharashtra (2,680)
- Karnataka (1331)
- Andhra Pradesh (628)
- Telangana (491)
- Chhattisgarh (458)
A major part of the above states either fall under drought-prone areas or cyclone-prone areas of India. Drought and erratic monsoons in central and peninsular India lead to crop failures, stress farmers, and lead to farmer suicides.
Farmers are committing suicide in many states of the country due to the following reasons:
- crop failure
- bankruptcy or debt
- family problems
- disease
