Tea is an important beverage crop in India. India is the second largest producer of tea in the world after China. Tea is a kind of beverage plantation crop. The beverage crop of tea in India was introduced by the British.
The following suitable geographical conditions are required for the cultivation of tea beverage crop:
The growth of tea crops requires tropical and sub-tropical climates. A moderate temperature between 21 to 28-degree centigrade is suitable for tea crops.
Tea crop requires deep, fertile, humus-rich, organic matter and well-drained soil.
Tea bushes require a warm and humid-free climate throughout the year.
Frequent rainfall is required throughout the year. High rainfall between 150 to 200 cm is suitable for tea crops.
Tea crops are mainly grown in Assam, Darjeeling, and Jalgaon hills of West Bengal, Meghalaya, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh.
