Answer.

Agriculture as we know it has three major components:

  • Inputs like seeds, irrigation, fertilizers, pesticides, soil, etc.
  • Output - final agricultural product.
  • Process- The process of cultivation includes sowing, care, harvesting, marketing, conservation, etc.


The literacy of the farmers helps in the proper management of all three components of agriculture. Literacy among farmers increases the options of farmers and empowers the farmers to use the latest knowledge in farming to optimize the farming process holistically.


In the changing climate, mechanized agricultural process, and globalized world, there is a great need for literacy among farmers.


Literacy among farmers helps to farm in the following ways:

  • Literacy, helps farmers to get informal training for farming
  • It helps in assessing the suitability of the crop according to soil and climate.
  • Helps in reducing the input cost of farming.
  • Helps in assessing the feasibility of integrated farming.
  • It helps in getting good prices for agricultural produce from the market.

  • Helps in using the latest knowledge in farming.
  • To conserve agricultural produce to get the best price from the market.
  • Selection of crop insurance.
  • Using weather and climate phenomena in farming.
  • It helps farmers to take advantage of government schemes and agricultural subsidies.
