Question.
On an outline map of India mark the areas covered by the “Red soil”.
(Chapter 6 Soils, Class 11 NCERT geography "India Physical Environment")
Answer.
The red color of the soil is due to the widespread diffusion of iron in crystalline and metamorphic rocks. In the eastern and southern parts of the Deccan plateau, red soil develops on crystalline igneous rocks in areas of low rainfall. Red soils usually lack nitrogen, phosphorus, and hummus.
The following are covered with "red soil";
- Piedmont region of the Western Ghats (Eastern part)
- parts of Odisha and Chhattisgarh
- the southern part of the middle Gangetic plain
- increased share of northeastern states
