Carbon footprint:
Carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gas emitted by various means. For standard measurement of carbon footprint, we convert all greenhouse gas equivalent to carbon dioxide.
Carbon footprint can be calculated at different levels like an individual, households, institutions, district levels, states, countries, continental levels, etc.
Major greenhouse gases are Carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbon, and nitrous oxide ( N2O). As per the estimate, the following are the relative contribution of various greenhouse gases to total global warming:
- Carbon dioxides ( 60 percent)
- Methane ( 20 percent)
- CFCs ( 14 percent)
- Nitrous oxide N2O ( 6 percent)
The following are major ways to reduce the carbon footprint:
- Reduce energy consumption from each level from individuals, households, industries, continents, etc.
- Avoid eating animal products
- Use public transportation and bicycle
- Buy as much as possible from local shops to avoid the transportation and packaging
