Question.
Discuss the steps to be taken to minimize environmental degradation by industry?
( Chapter - 6 Manufacturing Industries, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )
Answer.
As we know that industries mainly degrade the environment by polluting the environment. Air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, and noise pollution reduce the productivity of living beings and degrade the environment.
Following are the various steps taken by industry to reduce environmental degradation:
The following steps should be taken to reduce water pollution:
Every liter of industrial waste pollutes eight times the amount of fresh water. Therefore, industries should reduce the use of water for processing by reusing and recycling.
The industry should harvest water for its own use.
Hot water and polluted water should be treated before releasing industrial water into rivers and ponds.
The over-extraction of groundwater also needs to be legally regulated.
Industrial ash pollutes water, so water can be prevented from being polluted by using ash in making bricks and cement.
The following steps should be taken to reduce air pollution:
Particulate matter emitted by industries causes air pollution. Particulate matter entering the atmosphere from factories can be reduced by using electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, scrubbers, and inertial separators.
Smoke can be reduced by using oil and natural gas as fuel in place of coal in industries.
Energy use in industries can be reduced by increasing energy efficiency and reducing noise.
Noise-absorbing materials can be used in industry.
Minimizing environmental pollution through ash pond management, ash water recycling system, and liquid waste management.
