Question.

Define monsoons. What do you understand by “break” in monsoon?

( Chapter - 4 Climate, Cass 9 NCERT Contemporary India -I )

Answer.

Monsoon is derived from the Arabic word "Mausim" which means season. Monsoon means the change in the direction of the wind during a year according to the season.

Indian climate is highly influenced by monsoon winds, hence the climate of India is called monsoon climate.

In summer, the monsoon winds blow from the sea to the Indian landmass from the southwest direction and cause rainfall over the Indian landmass.

In winter, monsoon winds blow from land to sea in a northeast direction and cause rainfall on the Coromandel Coast.

"Break" in Monsoon:

During the monsoon season, there is no monsoon rain in the northern plains for two to three weeks, then we call it a break in the monsoon.

The main reason for the "break" in the monsoon is the movement of the monsoon trough. Due to various reasons, the monsoon trough (monsoon trough) sometimes moves towards the north and sometimes towards the south.

When the monsoon trough is over the plains, it brings good monsoon rainfall to the plains. When the monsoon trough is located near the Himalayas, there is a "break" in the monsoon over the plains and the Himalayan regions receive good rainfall.
