Question.
Distinguish between Metallic and nonmetallic minerals
( Chapter - 3 Mineral and Power Resources, Cass 8 NCERT Resources and Development ( Geography) )
Answer.
On the basis of composition, minerals are classified into two types-metallic minerals and nonmetallic minerals.
The following are the differences between metallic and non-metallic minerals-
Metallic minerals contain metal in raw form whereas non-metallic minerals do not contain metals in raw form.
Examples of metallic minerals are iron ore, manganese ore, and bauxite whereas examples of non-metallic minerals are mica, limestone, gypsum, coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
Metallic minerals are hard substances compared to non-metallic minerals.
Metallic minerals are generally found in igneous and metamorphic rocks whereas non-metallic minerals are generally found in sedimentary rock.
Metallic minerals have characteristics of luster or shine [ gold and silver are used jwellary] whereas non-metallic minerals are generally dull and do not have shine characteristics.
Metallic minerals are good in heat conductivity and electricity conduct whereas non-metallic minerals are basically good as insulators of electricity and heat.
Metallic minerals are good in malleability and ductility whereas non-metallic minerals lack malleability and ductility.
