Question.
Which sources of energy would you suggest for Arid regions.
( Chapter - 3 Mineral and Power Resources, Cass 8 NCERT Resources and Development ( Geography) )
Answer.
Suggested sources of energy for the arid regions would be solar and wind energy.
There is huge potential for Solar energy in arid regions because of the abundance of solar light and clear sky. In the Rajsthan, there are more than 300 days of clear sky, and an abundance of solar light gives ideal conditions for harnessing solar energy. The cost of land is also low, so the installation cost of the solar panel is cheaper in arid areas. The larger portion of the area of Rajasthan is arid, which is why it is the largest producer of solar energy in India; as of August 2022, Rajasthan produces 14.45 GW of solar energy.
In arid regions, due to low vegetation cover, winds are prominent agents, so wind energy can be harnessed easily in arid regions. Rajasthan is one of the major wind energy producers in the state, and Jaisalmer district has major windmills in the state.
So, solar and wind energy are major sources for arid regions.
