Question.
Which sources of energy would you suggest for coastal areas.
( Chapter - 3 Mineral and Power Resources, Cass 8 NCERT Resources and Development ( Geography) )
Answer.
Suggested sources of energy for coastal areas would be wind energy, tidal energy, and wave energy.
Coastal areas are rich sources of offshore and onshore winds due to the differential heating of ocean and land. So, wind energy is the most appropriate for coastal areas. Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark are the major producers of wind energy in coastal areas.
Tidal energy can be harnessed in coastal areas at the narrow openings of the sea. During high tides, tides are used to run the turbine. Russia and France are the major producers of tidal energy. The Gulf of Kachhchh in India has huge tidal mills.
Wave energy is a renewable and non-exhaustible source of energy that can be harnessed from the motion of the waves in coastal areas.
Wind energy, tidal energy, and wave energy are the most suitable sources of energy for coastal areas. Apart from these, solar energy is also suitable for coastal areas.
