Rivers are a very important natural resource of a country as rivers contribute to the development of many economic activities. India is blessed with many perennial and non-perennial rivers which are contributing to the socio-economic development of the country.
Rivers are important for the country's economy in the following ways-
Hydroelectricity is produced by building dams on rivers, which is a source of cheap electricity.
The water of the rivers is used for irrigation purposes on which agricultural activities are based.
The water of rivers provides water for drinking purposes which is available for drinking water to rural and urban settlements. Major big cities of India like Kanpur, Mathura, Varanasi, Patna, etc. are situated on the banks of the river.
Rivers contribute to the development of groundwater.
River water is the major source of industrial water used for industrial processing and cooling; This is the reason why many industries are located on the river channel.
Rivers are used for navigation which provides a cheap source of transport.
Rivers are also important for fisheries
Rivers are important for tourism which provides the livelihood for millions of people.
