The peninsular plateau is one of the six physiographic divisions of India, the other five are the Himalayas, Northern plains, Coastal plains, Indian desert, and Islands.
The peninsular plateau is composed of two broad divisions namely-Central the highland and Deccan Plateau.
The part of the peninsular plateau that lies north of the Narmada river is called Central Highland.
Aravali ranges, Vindhya ranges, and Satpura ranges are part of the Central Highland Plateau.
Central highlands are comprised of four minor plateaus namely-malwa plateau, Bundelkhand, Baghelkhand, and Chotanagpur plateau.
Malwa plateau lies in the western part of the central highland and it lies between Aravali and Vindhya ranges. Malwa plateau has a slope from the southwest towards the northeast, which is why rivers like Chambal, Sind, Betwa, and Ken flow from southwest to northwest.
The easternmost extension of the Central highland is the Chotanagpur plateau which is also known as the storehouse of mineral resources of India. Chotanagpur is drained by Damodar river.
