Write short notes on the Indian Desert.

Answer.

There are two types of deserts in India-Cold desert and the Hot Desert. The cold desert lies in Ladakh while the hot Desert lies in Western Rajasthan. The hot desert of India is simply known as the Indian desert.

Indian desert is one of the six physiographic divisions of India, the other five are the Himalayas, Northern plains, Peninsular India, Coastal plains, and Islands.

Indian desert lies west of Aravali hills. The great Indian desert is also called the Thar Desert. Indian desert is mainly part of Western Rajasthan but it is also extended to Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana.

Indian deserts physiographic divisions


Indian desert is sandy plains covered with sand dunes. The large area of the Indian desert is covered by Barchans ( crescent-shaped dunes). Longitudinal dunes are more prominent near the Indo-Pakistan boundary. 

Indian desert has a low vegetation cover and it has arid climates. This region receives very low rainfall below 15 cm in a year. 

Luni is the largest river in the Indian desert.
