Island groups of India are one of the six physiographic divisions of India, the other five are the Himalayas, Peninsular Plateau, Northern Plains, Coastal plains, and Indian desert.
India has two groups of islands-Lakshadweep Island group and the Andaman & Nicobar islands.
About Lakshadweep Island group:
Lakshadweep Islands group lying close to Kerala Coast or Malabar coast. They are in the Arabian sea.
Lakshadweep Islands groups are coral origin and they are formed by the deposition of coral skeletons. Prior to 1973, Lakshadweep Island groups were known as Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindive.
Kavaratti island is the administrative headquarter of Lakshadweep.
This island group has a great diversity of flora and fauna. Pitti island has a bird sanctuary which is also part of the Lakshadweep island group.
About Andaman and Nicobar Island group:
Andaman and Nicobars island group is located in the Bay of Bengal. Ten degrees channels divide this island group into two groups-Andaman groups and Nicobar Island groups.
Andaman group lies in the north and the Nicobar group lies in the south.
Andaman and Nicobar groups of islands are much bigger than the Lakshadweep islands group.
This island group is an elevated portion of submarine mountains.
This island group has great strategic importance to India.
This island group lies close to the equator and the equatorial climate is found here. It has a rich biodiversity.
India's only active volcano " Barren island" is located in Andaman and Nicobar island.
