Answer.

As we know that the Himalayas is comprised of three parallel ranges in its longitudinal extends-Great Himalayas, Himachal Himalayas, and Shiwalik Himalayas.

Great Himalayas is the northernmost ranges of the Himalayas, it is also known as Himadri or Inner Himalayas.

The great Himalayas are contains many glaciers. State-wise names of some important glaciers of the Great Himalayas are listed below:

Glaciers in Himachal Pradesh:

  • Bhadal Glacier
  • Bara Shigri glacier
  • Chhota Shigri glacier

Bhadal Glacier is located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh and it is in Great Himalayas.

 Bara Shigri glacier is the largest glacier in Himachal Pradesh and it is located in Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. 

Chhota Shigri glacier is located on the northern side of the Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh in the great Himalayas.


Glaciers in Uttarakhand:

The following are important glaciers that are located in Great Himalayan in Uttarkahdn State

  • Gangotri
  • Yamunotri
  • Satopanth
  • Pindari
  • Kamet
  • Milam

Gangotri glacier is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It is the source of the Ganga river.

Yamunotri glacier is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand and it is the source of the Yamuna river. 

Satopanth glacier is located in Uttrakhand in the great Himalaya range and it is the source of the Alaknanda river. Satopanth glacier is a famous trekking site.

Pindari glacier is located Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand and the Pindar river originated from Pindari glacier. The highest peak of the Pindari glacier is Nanda Devi.

Kamet glacier is located in the Garhwal district of Uttarakhand and the highest peak is Kamet which is the second highest peak in Uttarakhand after Nanda Devi.

Milam glacier is located in Kumaon Himalayas in Uttarakhand. It is the source of the Gori Ganga river.

Glaciers in Nepal:

The following are important glaciers of Nepal that lie in the Great Himalayas:

  • Khumbu Glacier
  • Ngozumpa Glacier
  • Imja Glacier
  • Ambu Lapcha Glacier


Glaciers in Sikkim:

The following glaciers are located in Sikkim and Great Himalayas:

  • Zemu Glacier
  • South Lhonak Glacier
  • Changsang Glacier

Zemu glacier is the largest glacier in Sikkim and the eastern Himalayas. Kanchenjunga peak is located in the Zemu Glacier.

Glaciers in Arunachal Pradesh:

  • Bichom Glacier
  • Kangto Glacier
  • Mazgol Glacier

As the great Himalayas are the loftiest mountain ranges in the world that have an average height of 6000 meters, however, there are many mountain passes in the Great Himalayas.

Some important names of the glaciers of the Great Himalayas are listed below:

  • Niti Pass
  • Shipki La
  • Lipulekh
  • Nathu La
  • Jelep La


Niti pass is located in Gret Himalay in Uttarkhand and it is the bordering the line between China and India. 

Shipki La is located in Himachal Pradesh, river Satluj flow near Shipki La pass. 

Lipulekh mountain pass is located trijunction of India, China, and Nepal in Uttarakhand. It is also a way to pilgrimage to Mount Kailash.

Nathu La is located in Sikkim state and it is routed to China through Sikkim state.

Jelep La is a mountain pass which is located in Sikkim and part of the Great Himalayas.
