( Chapter - 4 Agriculture, Cass 8 NCERT Resources and Development ( Geography) )

Answer.

Plantation agriculture is one type of commercial farming where single crops like tea, coffee, sugarcane, cashew, rubber, banana, coconut, or cotton are grown; other types of commercial farming are commercial grain farming and mixed farming.

The following are the main characteristics of plantation agriculture:

A large amount of capital and labor are used in plantation agriculture. For example, a large number of laborers are required to pick the tea leaves.

Produces of plantation agriculture need processing; processing may be done on the farm itself( like banana plantation agriculture) or it may be processed in nearby factories like in the case of sugarcane, coffee, tea, and cotton.

The development of transportation networks is essential to connect plantation fields, factories, and markets.

Plantation agriculture is done in large areas.

Scientific management of soil nutrients is needed because the same plants are grown all the time, so it can lead to the loss of specific nutrients from the soil.

Major plantation crops are grown in the tropical region of the world. For example, rubber in Malaysia, coffee in Brazil, and tea in India, and Sri Lanka are some examples.
