Question.
Give reasons as to why the Tamil Nadu coast receives winter rainfall.
( Chapter - 4 Climate, Cass 9 NCERT Contemporary India -I )
Answer.
Rain on the Tamil Nadu coast is not brought by the southwest monsoon, but by the northeast monsoon winds. The main reason for this is the geographical location of the Tamil Nadu coast. The southwest monsoon winds do not bring rain to the Coromandel Coast or the Tamil Nadu coast because the Western Ghats intercept the Arabian branch of the southwest monsoon and become dry if it reaches the Tamil Nadu coast. and the Bay of Bengal branch of the southwest monsoon runs parallel to the coast, causing little or no rainfall.
In the winter season [October to December] when the north-east monsoon winds [cold monsoon or north-east trade winds] pass through the Bay of Bengal, they get enough moisture and cause rain on the Tamil Nadu coast. This is the reason, it rains on the Tamil Nadu coast in winter.
