The windward slopes of Rajasthan (Western Rajasthan), Gujarat, and the Western Ghats fall under the rain shadow region of the southwest monsoon rainfall, which is why these are drought-prone regions.
The relief plays a major role in determining the rainfall, the high mountains act as a barrier to the monsoon winds, and the mountains on the windward side receive more rain because they have enough moisture. But there is no rain on the windward side of the mountain because there is not enough moisture left with the winds.
The Arabian branch of the southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfall to the western side of the Western Ghats and the eastern slope of the Western Ghats is the rain shadow region as the winds become dry when they reach there. This is the reason that the windward side of the Western Ghats is a drought-prone area.
Gujarat and part of Rajasthan do not have any big mountains that can block the monsoon winds for rain, and the Aravalli range is parallel to the south-west wind direction, which is why parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat are drought-prone. are areas.
