Question.
Give reasons, sedimentary rocks are formed from sediments.
( Chapter - 2 Inside Our Earth, Class 7 NCERT, Our Environment( Geography) )
Answer.
Sediments (sediment) are small rock particles of igneous or sedimentary or metamorphic rocks. These sediments are carried and deposited by various agents such as winds and running water. When these loose sediments are buried deep, they become compacted and harden to form layers of shallows. These types of rocks are called sedimentary rocks.
For example,
Sandstone (which is a sedimentary rock) is formed when grains of sand [sand sediments] become compacted and hardened.
Mudstone (which is a sedimentary rock) is formed when the clay grains [clay sediments] become compacted and hardened.
Limestone (which is a sedimentary rock) is formed when sediments of calcium and magnesium become compacted and hardened.
From the above example, we can clearly say that sedimentary rocks are formed from sediments.
