Which gas creates a greenhouse effect in the atmosphere?

Question.

Which gas creates a greenhouse effect in the atmosphere?

( Chapter - 4 Air, Class 7 NCERT, Our Environment( Geography) )

Answer.

Carbon dioxide (Co2) gas causes the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere. Various activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and the exhalation of animals release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which creates a greenhouse effect by trapping heat from the earth.

Without carbon dioxide, life on Earth would not have been possible, as Earth would have been too cold to live on. However, in today's world, increased carbon dioxide emissions due to the burning of fossil fuels and increased energy consumption lead to an increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to a rise in temperature. We call it global warming.

Apart from carbon dioxide, other gases such as methane and nitrous oxide are important greenhouse gases.
