( Chapter - 5, Industries, Cass 8 NCERT, Resources and Development ( Geography) )

Answer.

The iron and steel industry is often called the backbone of modern industry because of the following reasons:

Almost everything we use is either made of iron or steel or tools and machinery are made of these metals.

Ships, trains, trucks, cars, buses, tractors, and autos are largely made of steel. Therefore, the automobile industry and the shipping industry are largely dependent on steel raw materials.

Household items such as safety pins, needles, utensils, and hangers are made of steel.

Oil wells and other drilling machines are largely dependent on steel machinery.

Minerals are mined with steel tools.

Farm machinery is mostly made of steel machinery.

Steel structures are used in construction activities and large buildings.

Steel pipelines are used to transport liquid and gaseous materials.

So we can say that the iron and steel industry is often referred to as the backbone of modern industry as they provide steel as raw materials for many industries and economic activities such as the automobile industry, construction activities, heavy industries, and electrical and electronic industries.
