( Chapter - 2 Inside Our Earth, Class 7 NCERT, Our Environment( Geography) )
Answer.
Rocks are the basic building blocks of the earth's crust[ uppermost layer of the earth]. Any natural mineral substance that forms the earth's crust is called rock.
There are three kinds of rocks, names of three types of rocks are Igneous rock, sedimentary rock, and metamorphic rock.
About Igneous Rock:
Igneous rock is also known as a primary rock as it directly forms from the cooling of molten magma either inside the earth or on the earth's surface. Examples of Igneous rocks are Basalt rock ( which the Deccan plateau is made of), Breccia, Granite, Gabbro, Pegmatite, Tuff, and other volcanic rocks.
About sedimentary rock:
Sedimentary rocks are formed by the compression and hardening of small rock particles. Sedimentary rock may contain the remains of plants, animals, and microorganisms.
Examples of sedimentary rocks are sandstone( grain of sand), limestone, clay, and shale.
About Metamorphic rock:
Under great pressure and heat, the chemical composition of igneous and sedimentary rocks changes as a result new types of rocks are formed which are commonly known as metamorphic rocks.
Examples of metamorphic rocks are slate(changes from clay) and marble(formed from limestone)
