What are metamorphic rocks?
( Chapter - 2 Inside Our Earth, Class 7 NCERT, Our Environment( Geography) )
Answer.
Metamorphic rocks are one of the three types of rocks, the other two types being igneous and sedimentary rocks.
Under high pressure and temperature, the chemical and physical composition of sedimentary rock or igneous rock changes, and a new type of rock is formed which we call metamorphic rock.
Some examples of metamorphic rocks are gneiss, quartzite, slate, and marble.
Under high pressure and heat, granite (igneous) rocks are converted into gneisses (metamorphic rocks).
Under high pressure and heat, sandstone (sedimentary) shale is converted into quartzite (metamorphic rock).
Under high pressure and heat, shale/clay (sedimentary) rocks are converted into slate (metamorphic) rocks.
Under high pressure and heat, limestone (sedimentary) rocks are converted into marble (metamorphic) rocks.
