Question.

What are oxbow lakes?

( Chapter - 3 Our Changing Earth, Class 7 NCERT, Our Environment( Geography) )

Answer.

Oxbow lake is also known as the cut-off lake. Oxbow lake is a type of erosional landform formed by a meandering river. It is found near the floodplain of the river.

When the river enters the plains, it twists and turns and flows on a meandering path.  The large bend of the river is known as a meander. Over time there is continuous erosion and deposition along the sides of the meander, due to which the side of the meander comes closer. Later the meander loops get cut off from the main river channel. This separated meander loop forms a lake, which is called Oxbow lake.

Oxbow lakes are curving lakes formed by the course of the meandering River.
