Question.
What do you mean by a rock cycle?
( Chapter - 2 Inside Our Earth, Class 7 NCERT, Our Environment( Geography) )
Answer.
One type of rock changes to another type in a cyclic manner under certain conditions which is known as the rock cycle.
The rock cycle occurs in the following way:
The molten magma cools down to form igneous rock.
Weathered particles of igneous rocks accumulate in low-lying areas, and under compression, they form sedimentary rocks from rock sediments. So, in this way, the igneous rock gets converted into sedimentary rock.
At extreme heat and pressure, igneous and sedimentary rocks change into new types of rocks called metamorphic rocks. So, in this way igneous and sedimentary rocks get converted into metamorphic rocks.
When igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks are re-melted at extreme temperatures and pressures to become hot magma again.
The following diagram explains the rock cycle-
