Differentiate between Attitude and Aptitude. (UPPSC 2020)
Answer.
Attitude and aptitudes are different aspects of an individual’s skills and abilities. Attitudes and aptitude play important roles in performing the responsibilities of civil servants. The following are the differences between Attitude and aptitude-
Attitude refers to an individual’s mental view (intention) towards their work and their environment while Aptitude refers to an individual inherent ability or capacity to perform a particular task.
Attitude is mainly a psychological construct that reflects an individual mindset whereas aptitude is mainly a cognitive construct that reflects natural abilities and potential to perform a certain task.
A positive attitude helps civil servants to stay motivated, focused, and engaged with their work. At the same time, Aptitude refers to the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform various duties and responsibilities effectively.
A positive attitude is needed for civil servants to fulfill responsibilities whereas relevant aptitude of civil servants like analytical and problem-solving skills, communication and interpersonal skills, leadership, and management skills are needed for success.
If public servants have positive attitudes but they lack aptitude, then they will not be able to become good public servants because they will be interested in governing but in the absence of aptitude, they will have to face the struggle in executive responsibility.
People can not become good public servants even if there is a negative attitude because they may lack dedication or interest in working.
In conclusion, attitude and aptitude are two skills, and combinations of positive attitude and relevant aptitudes ( like analytical and problem-solving skills, communication and interpersonal skills, leadership, and management skills) are needed for civil servants to succeed in public life.
