Corruption in society refers to the misuse of power or position or public resources for personal gains; it occurs at all levels of society, including government, business, and civil society. Illegal and ethical behaviors like bribery, nepotism, fraud, and other processes undermine the principles of fairness, accountability, and transparency; it increases corruption in society.
Prevention of corruption in society is very much needed as it can lead to negative consequences like reduced economic growth, political instability, social equality, and erosion of public trust. Corruption in society affects everyone and especially the most vulnerable and marginalized communities who rely on public services.
Corruption in society especially in India is deeply rooted and requires a multi-faced approach. Here are some steps that can be taken to prevent corruption in society-
Inculcating ethical values in society; People know that corruption is unethical but they do not follow it. Values like integrity, honesty, and transparency need to inculcate in people to prevent corruption in society. Corruption in Japanese society is very less as compared to Indian society; because Japanese people own values like honesty, integrity, and dedication.
Strengthening laws and institution; In Indian society, strengthening of laws and institution like the judiciary, CBI, Enforcement directors, etc needs to be strengthened to prevent corruption and hold corrupt officials accountable.
Promoting transparency and accountability; and strengthening the Right to Information Act; Transparency and accountability are two essential tools to prevent in society. Government should empower the public to get more to more information about the functioning of the government to increase transparency like contacts, government budgets, etc.
Improving public services; Corruption often arises when the public is forced to pay a bribe for civil services. Public servants should focus to provide public services easily and prevent corruption.
Increasing public awareness; Awareness raising about rights and responsibilities and the negative impact of corruption must be provided to prevent corruption in society.
Empowering civil society; Government should empower civil society to keep watch on government functionality and also provide resources to them to carry out their work.
International cooperation; Corruption is a global problem and hence it requires global cooperation; Indian government should work with other countries to share the best practices and enquire about deposits of Indian abroad.
In conclusion, the prevention of corruption in society requires a multi-faceted approach that requires strengthening laws and institutions, promoting transparency and accountability, improving public services, and fostering international cooperation.
