‘Public interest’ refers to the common good or general welfare of society as a whole, rather than the narrow interests of a particular group or individuals. Public interest is often seen in government policies and decisions, as it makes positive impacts on the well-being of the public. For example, building community tanks, roads, and highways are examples of public interest. Civil servants have the ethical responsibility to work in the best interest of the public interest.
The right to information was enacted by the Indian parliament in 2005, which gives the legal right to citizens to access information for working and functionalities of public servants or public institutions, with certain limitations. Right to pieces of information also directs public officials to disclose certain information to the public domain. The right to information empower the citizen to make themselves accountable to civil servants. It ensures transparency, accountability, and people participation in governance, which are key elements for good governance. Right to information is key for good and ethical governance for a country.
The right to information is closely linked to the concept of public interest, as it empowers the common citizen to access information relevant to the public good. Right to information help to ensure greater transparency, people participation, and accountability that help that government decisions are made in the public's best interests, rather than private interest.
