Persuasion is the art of negotiation and logical skills to influence someone's moral beliefs, values, and actions. The process of persuasion involves presenting arguments and evidence to convince others to take action or change their behavior.
In the context of public protests, public protests are often targeted at public servants, and public servants are expected to respond to the grievances raised by them.
The following are the roles of persuasion in relation to public protest-
Resolving Public Grievances: Public protests are often used to increase attention to public servants the things which are not given enough attention. In relation to public protests, persuasion can help create a dialogue between protesters and civil servants. Through persuasion, the protestors have to be convinced that their grievances are being resolved under the defined rules, laws, and procedures, or if necessary, they can also agree to effective policy changes that will ensure social justice and the economy of the state. Civil servants must use various persuasion skills such as active listening, empathizing with problems, and offering problem solutions.
Building Trust and Transparency: Public protests when they lose faith in the government system, so public servants can use persuasion skills to restore public trust in the government system, they need must use transparency in persuasion and meet the demands on time to build trust.
Minimizing the negative impact of public protests: Public protests often see the use of negative actions such as traffic jams [Chakka jams] and damage to public property. A civil servant has the responsibility to persuade public protestors to protest in a peaceful and safe manner in order to reduce the negative impact of public protest through persuasion.
Balancing Interest: Civil servants have to balance the interest of several social groups including the protestor groups and the government and for this persuasion plays an important role. Public protesters usually represent the interest of a particular group, but civil servants have to persuade them to take into account the interests of the government and others as well.
In summary, we can say that the roles of persuasion in relation to public protest are to address public grievances, build trust and balance the interest of different social groups.
