Corruption, whether small or big, threats internal security and weaken the nation's security by promoting crimes, cross-border linkages, and undermining government institutions.
Internal security is key for maintaining the rule of law, social harmony, and economic development. Corruption, insurgency, caste discrimination, intolerance, income inequality, and poverty are major threats to internal security in India.
Corruption is a major threat to Internal security, especially in developing countries like India. The following ways corruption causes a threat to Internal security;
Weaken of Institutions; Corruption undermines the effectiveness of key institutions responsible of maintain law and order including the police, judiciary, and other administrative bodies. It weakens the public trust in these institutions, leading to a breakdown of the rule of law. This weakens the overall internal security and also weakens the public trust in the government’s ability to protect them.
Facilitate drug networks and organized crime: Corrupt officers accept bribes and facilitate drug networks and crimes ( rape, kidnapping, loot, theft, human trafficking, etc) in society. The presence of these activities destabilizes internal security.
Economic impact: Corruption reduces the effectiveness of the utilization of public resources and funds for providing essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructural development. It also creates a negative image for business investment that reduces foreign direct investment in the country. As a result, it increases the income inequality in the country, which also cause the rise of other threat like insurgency, social unrest, protest, and poverty.
Border security and Terrorism: Corruption undermines border security, it makes illegal activities like trafficking easier in borders area. Corrupt officers take bribes and turn a blind eye to the smuggling of drugs, weapons, or human trafficking. These activities facilitate terrorism to cross the boundary and pose a direct threat to internal security.
Social unrest: Corruption erodes the public trust in public institutions and government, it also increases the income inequality and poverty in the country. As a result, it increases social unrest, protest, the rise of radical elements, and extremism, which pose a threat to internal security.
In conclusion, Corruption is a major threat to internal security as it weakens the governing institutions, fosters organized crime, facilitates illicit activities ( drug networks, human trafficking, rape, loot, and kidnapping), promotes social unrest, and undermines border security. Addressing corruption is crucial for strengthening internal security.
Government should take several measures to prevent corruption in society like strengthening legal frameworks, using innovative technological help, promoting transparency and accountability, institutional reforms, and international cooperation to cross border corruption.
