Question.
Write a note on the “Problem of equilibrium between economic development in carbon emission”.
(UPPSC, UP PCS Mains General Studies-III/GS-3 2018)
Answer.
Due to the absence of green energy technology, at present, there is a proportional ( positive) relationship between economic growth and carbon emission.
The problem of equilibrium between economic development and carbon emission arise when countries focus on economic development on the one hand and also focus on the reduction of greenhouse gas emission on the other hand.
At present economic development of countries is largely dependent on the burning of fossil fuels for energy needs, which contributes to carbon emissions, and increases the global climate crisis.
Achieving a balance between economic growth and carbon emission reduction is crucial for sustainable development.
The following ways some key points regarding the Problem of Equilibrium between economic development and carbon emission:
Economic Development and Carbon Emissions:
Economic development involves industrialization and urbanization, and these economic activities increase energy consumption and fossil fuel ( Coal, petroleum, diesel) burning. These activities release huge carbon dioxide ( Co2) into the atmosphere.
Climate Change and Environmental Impact:
Carbon emissions contribute to climate change by trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, leading to rising temperatures, sea level rises, extreme weather events, and ecological disruption. These harm economic development as they damage infrastructure, agricultural productivity, and human health.
Sustainable Development Goal:
United nation sustainable development goal 13 focuses on climate change, emphasizing the need to combat climate change which emphasizes sustainable development.
Decoupling Economic growth and carbon emission:
The country should focus on energy generation from non-polluting sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy, hydel energy, and biomass. The country should also focus on energy efficiency and sustainable urban planning.
Focus to shift to low-Carbon technologies:
Balancing economic development and carbon emission also requires shifting to low-carbon technologies.
Shifting to low-carbon Technologies and renewable energy sources is essential for reducing carbon emissions while maintaining economic growth. The ways to transition to low-carbon technologies are to invest in renewable energy infrastructure, promote energy-efficient technologies, and encourage innovation in clean technologies.
In conclusion, Keeping an equilibrium between economic development and carbon emission is a complex and multifaceted challenge. However, with strong political will, effective policies, technological advancement, and collective global action, it is possible to foster economic development while mitigating the harmful effects of carbon emissions on the environment and future generations.
