 What are scorched earth tactics?

Scorched earth tactics are a military strategy that aims to destroy everything that might be useful to the enemy, including water, crops, food, railway lines, roads, ports, people, forests, etc.


In the First Anglo-Maratha War ( 1775-1782), The Maratha cavalry encircled the British military and they used the “scorched earth” tactic to attack them.


Russia had used scorched earth tactics in World War I and World War II. Russian army destroyed their own crops, railway lines, roads, etc when they had retreated from the Imperial German Army. 


In the Sino-Japanese conflict, Britisher also used scorched earth tactics against the Japanese army.
