Anglo Mysore wars ( 1767-1799) | Notes, Treaty, Years, Important facts

 Anglo-Mysore Wars:

The Anglo-Mysore Wars were a series of four wars, fought between the British East India Company and the Kingdom of Mysore ( Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan) in the 18th century.


First Anglo-Mysore War:

The following are important facts about the First Anglo-Mysore War:

Year: 1767-69

Treaty: Treaty of Madras (1769)

Governor General of India:  Lord Verelst

Associated Persons: Haider Ali, Joseph Smith, John Wood

Outcome: The treaty provided for the exchange of prisoners and the conquered areas. East India Company promised Haider Ali to help Mysore in case of any attack.


Second Anglo-Mysore War:

The following are important facts about the Second Anglo-Mysore War:

Year: 1780-84

Treaty: Treaty of Mangalore ( 1784)

Governor General of India: Warren Hastings (1772-1785)

Associated Persons: Haider Ali, George Macartney,  Eyre Coote

Outcome: Both parties gave back the territories they had taken from each other.



Third Anglo-Mysore War:

The following are important facts about the Third Anglo-Mysore War:

Year: 1790-92

Treaty: Treaty of Seringapatam (1792)

Governor General of India: Lord Cornwallis

Associated Persons: Tipu Sultan,  William Medows,  Charles Cornwallis

Outcome: Half of the Mysorean territory was taken over by the alliance of the British, Nizam, and the Marathas. Furthermore, War damage of three crore rupees was also taken from Tipu Sultan, and Tipu’s two sons were taken as hostages by the East India Company. 


Fourth Anglo-Mysore War:

The following are important facts about the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War:

Year: 1799

Treaty: Mysore accepted the Subsidiary Alliance.

Governor General of India: Lord Wellesley

Associated Persons: Tipu Sultan and George Harris

Outcome:  Mysore was handed over to the old Hindu dynasty (Wodeyars), Krishnaraja III, who accepted the subsidiary alliance.
