What is a waterfall?

A Waterfall is one kind of erosional landform, formed when a river flows over a vertical drop or a series of steep drops in the hard rocky terrain. 

The type of rock and geographical processes in the area influence the formation of the waterfall.


1. The name of the biggest waterfall in India [ NCERT]

Answer. Kunchikal Falls ( Abbey Falls) is the biggest waterfall in India. It is located in Shimoga District of Karnataka. It is on the Varahi River. The Height of Kunchikal waterfall is about 455 meters or 1493 feet.




2. The name of the second biggest waterfall in India [ NCERT]

Answer. Shivasamudram Falls is the second biggest waterfall in India. It is on the river Kaveri. It is in Karnataka. 




3. The name of the Tallest Plunge Waterfall in India.

Answer. Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. It is located near Cherrapunji, Meghalaya. 



The following are other important Waterfalls of India:


1. Jog Falls ( Gerosoppa Falls), Karnataka.


Jog Falls is also known as Gerosoppa Falls. It is on the Sharavathi River in Karnataka. It is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India after Nohkalikai Falls of Meghalaya.


2. Dudhsagar Falls, Goa:


Dudhsagar Falls ( Sea of Milk) is on the Mandovi River, Goa.


3. Athirapally Falls, Kerala:


Athirapally Falls is also known as the "Niagara of India". It is located in Western Ghats, Kerala.


4. Hogenakkal Falls, Tamil Nadu:


Hogenakkal Falls is on the Kaveri River, located in Tamil Nadu.


5. Vantawng Falls, Mizoram:


Vantawng Falls is the highest waterfall in Mizoram. It is on the Vanha River.


6. Bhagsu Waterfall, Himachal Pradesh:


Bhagsu Waterfall is located near McLeod Ganj in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.


7. Kempty Falls, Uttarakhand:


Kempty Falls is located near Mussoorie in Uttarakhand.


8. Chuliya Waterfall, Rajasthan:


Chuliya Waterfall is on Chambal River. It is in Rajasthan.


9. Someshwar Waterfall, Maharashtra:


Someshwar Waterfall is on the Godavari River, located in Nashik, Maharashtra.


10. Budha Ghagh ( Lodh Falls), Jharkhand:


Budha Ghagh  Waterfall is also known as Lodh Falls. It is on the Budha River. It is located in Palamu district of Jharkhand. 


11. Dhuandhar Waterfall, Madhya Pradesh:


Dhuandhar Waterfall is located on the Narmada River. It is in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.


12. Chachai Waterfall, Madhya Pradesh:


Chachai Waterfall in on Bihad RIver. It is located near Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.


13. Hundru Falls, Jharkhand:


Hundru Falls is on the Subarnarekha River. It is located near Ranchi, Jharkhand.


14. Gokak Falls, Karnataka:


Gokak Falls is on the Ghataprabha River. It is located in Belagavi district of Karnataka.


15. Duduma Waterfall, Odisha:


Duduma Waterfall is located on the Machkund River. It is in the Koraput district of Odisha.
