Key facts about the Cabinet Mission Plan:
The Cabinet Mission Plan was sent to India by UK Prime Minister, Clement Attlee. It had a three-member committee comprised of Pethick Lawrence, Stafford Cripps, and AV Alexander. Pethick Lawrence was the secretary of the state during that time.
They came to India on 24 March 1946 to discuss the transfer of powers from the British government to the Indian leadership and published their report on 16 May 1946.
It talked about the Union of States ( Federal Union), the formation of the Constituent Assembly, the Freedom to join the Commonwealth, the Grouping of Provinces, the representation of minorities, and the interim government.
It recommended an undivided India and rejected the demand of the Muslim League for a separate Pakistan.
The Constituent Assembly was constituted based on the Cabinet Mission Plan. The total strength of the Constituent Assembly under the Cabinet Mission Plan was 389.
The First Meeting of the Constituent Assembly was held on 9 December 1946.
