What is Geo-glacial engineering | UPSC Geography Mains Concept

 Question.

What is Geo-glacial engineering or Glacial Geoengineering? how does it help reduce climate change's impact on sea level rises?

जियो-ग्लेशियल इंजीनियरिंग क्या है? यह समुद्र तल वृद्धि में जलवायु परिवर्तन के प्रभाव को कम करने में कैसे मदद करता है?

Answer.

Glacial Geoengineering refers to the intentional manipulation of Glaciers and ice sheets to mitigate the effect of climate change on glacier melting and sea level rises. It involves slowing or preventing the melting of glaciers and it also involves artificial snow production.

The proposed solutions under Geo-glacial engineering are as follows:

  • Albedo Modification
  • Fiber-based Curtains
  • Structural intervention
  • Drilling Holes in the Glacial Belt
  • Artificial Snow Production

Albedo Modification:

It involves altering the albedo ( reflectivity) of glaciers. It can be done by spreading reflective sand on glaciers.

Fiber-based Curtains:

It prevents the contact of ice sheets to warm oceans. It helps in delaying melting glaciers by 10 times.

Structural intervention:

Constructing dams or barriers that prevent glaciers from going to the ocean.

Drilling Holes in the Glacial Belt:

It helps in draining melted water through the hole, which helps prevent ice sheets from further melting.

Artificial Snow Production:

Artificial Snow production could balance the natural ways of ice depletion.
