Question.
Why is it 5:30 pm in India when it is 12 pm or noon in London?
( Chapter 1, Locating Places on the Earth)
Answer.
As we know,
London is located at 0-degree longitude, which is also known as Prime Meridian or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), where the counting of standard time for different regions starts.
Since India is located east of London ( or Prime Meridian or Greenwich Mean Time), therefore Indian time will be ahead of London time.
Indian Standard Time ( IST) is based on the 82.5 degrees East longitude.
If we convert 82.5 degrees longitude into minutes then it will be 82.5*4=330 minutes or 5 hours and 30 minutes.
That is why when it is 12 pm or noon in London; In India, it will be 12 pm + 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead= 5:30 pm.
